Choosing the Right Lactation Consultant: Your Guide to Breastfeeding Success in Gilbert, AZ

Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, but it’s not always easy. Whether you’re a first-time mom or adding to your family, having the right lactation consultant can make all the difference. From latching issues to low milk supply, the right expert provides guidance, reassurance, and practical solutions.

But how do you choose the best lactation consultant for you and your baby? Let’s break it down.

What is an IBCLC, and Why Does It Matter?

If you’re looking for a lactation consultant, one of the first things to check is their IBCLC certification. IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, which is the gold standard in breastfeeding support. To earn this title, a consultant must complete extensive training, clinical hours, and exams to ensure they can help with all aspects of lactation, including:

  • Latching difficulties

  • Low milk supply

  • Painful breastfeeding

  • Tongue and lip ties

  • Pumping and milk storage

  • Breastfeeding premature or multiple babies

IBCLCs are also required to stay up to date with the latest research, meaning you’ll get expert, evidence-based advice that fits your unique situation.

Finding the Right Fit: Experience & Specialties

Not all lactation consultants specialize in the same issues. Some focus on hospital-based newborn care, while others provide in-home support for ongoing breastfeeding challenges. When searching for the right consultant, consider:

  • Experience Level – How long have they been practicing? Do they have experience with issues similar to yours?

  • Areas of Specialization – If you have a preemie, twins, or specific challenges like tongue ties, make sure your consultant has worked with those cases.

  • Client Reviews – What are other parents saying about their approach and effectiveness?

Taking the time to check these details can help you feel confident in your choice.

Comfort & Communication: A Key Part of Your Experience

Breastfeeding is deeply personal, and your lactation consultant should be someone who makes you feel comfortable and supported. Some moms prefer a straightforward, no-nonsense approach, while others do better with a gentle, step-by-step method. Think about what works best for you and ask:

  • Do they respect my parenting style and personal choices?

  • Are they patient, reassuring, and easy to talk to?

  • Do they communicate clearly and answer all my questions?

A good lactation consultant meets you where you are—without judgment—and helps make breastfeeding work for you and your baby.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right lactation consultant in Gilbert, AZ is about more than just credentials—it’s about finding someone who fits your needs, understands your challenges, and makes you feel confident in your breastfeeding journey. Whether you’re dealing with common newborn struggles or just need some guidance, the right support can make all the difference.

Stephanie Celis

Hello! I am Stephanie Celis RN, IBCLC and I am a nurse of 11+ years and the founder and owner of Original Mami.

I am a mother of three, and just like many of you, I once struggled with my breastfeeding journey. When I had my first baby, breastfeeding was completely new to my family and I.

I had little support or guidance after giving birth and taking my little one home for the first time. Truthfully, I was exhausted, mentally and physically, and even a little scared about whether or not I would be able to breastfeed successfully!

When I became a postpartum nurse , 6+ yrs ago, after having my third baby, I learned so much more about breastfeeding that I wish I had known early on. This prompted me to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), so that I can help other mom’s that have experienced the same hardships as me.

Original Mamí is taking it back to the root by reintroducing mama’s to the “original” way of nourishment.

For many of us, breastfeeding was not seen in our cultures and resources were often unavailable. By bringing awareness and exposure into our communities, we can work to improve breastfeeding success esss rates and normalize breastfeeding together!

We help you and your family navigate breastfeeding so that you can know what to expect, know how to handle the tough times, and always feel supported throughout your unique journey.

We advocate for super strong, unapologetic mamas like you!
